Lou Rhodes @ The Lowry, ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Salford. 29th October 2007.
..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Lou Rhodes has a voice that can bring me to my knees and make me cry, it is simply unique, beautiful and has been mesmerising me for years throughout her solo career and her years singing in Glastonbury legends Lamb. Tonight is brilliant, very chilled out and intimate, it's just a shame that the audience are not a bit more receptive tonight. Lou and her fantastic 5 piece band, (including the fantastic Andy Hammond on double bass) kick off the show with The Rain a beautiful tune from the new LP, "Bloom", on Lou's own label, Infinite Bloom. This is Lou's second solo record, the debut being, "Beloved One", which rightfully received a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize in 2006. Most of tonight's tunes come from the second album, however amazing versions of "Fortress" from the debut and Lamb classic "Gabrielle", the latter receiving the loudest applause of the evening. The sound throughout is clean, crisp, organic and goes so far beyond the folk music tag she seems to be labelled with. The support acts tonight go from the sublime to ridiculous, the first act sublime beautiful crafted tunes with a brilliant beat boxer, the second act, and ridiculous.
Buy the new record, if Lou's voice does not entice you in to seeing her live, you must be mad or deaf.

Underground Resistance and Jeff Mills @ The Warehouse Project, Manchester . 19th October.

The venue is better, the soundsystem is fantastic and loud and the security inside if not outside seems much more chilled out. It feels great and proper old skool tonight, a bit like an old rave and there are plenty of young and old ravers out tonight.
Interstellar Fugitives, Underground Resistances electro incarnation. It's raw, it's political, it's very intelligent and it's pretty damn funky. All dressed in black and faces covered these are men on a mission. Imagine Gil Scott Heron, Public Enemy and a 909 having a party in an elevator, brilliant and intense, you are some way to realising what tonight is like. Led by the genius that is Mad Mike and the simply fantastic Cornelius on vocals and his ultra weird dancing the band up classic after classic UR tune. Utopia is finally achieved when boom, Final Fantasy gets dropped. BLISS.
Support tonight is from aciiid legend Francois K. Not up to his usual standards tonight, a bit flat and not enough acid, this is what happens when you turn up to play on a laptop, make no doubt vinyl rules and always will.
Jeff Mills, no one touches him, fluid, raw and never disappointing. With an array of decks, 909's and other effects the next two hours are a blur but a fantastic blur. I9, Java, Mecca and Cycle 30 are some of the tunes I can pick out of a set of hundreds. This man is and always will be the Wizard. Lets hope the Warehouse Project bring him back for New Year.

We created tomorrow and live in your imagination, we will never die.

Tribes of the City @ Static Gallery, ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Liverpool, 23rd October 2007.
..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
It's a cold and wet Tuesday night in Liverpool, the streets are deserted and unfortunately so is tonight's gig, unfortunately only a handful of people have made the effort to come out and see this fine band. Recently voted, "Best Baltic Act 2007", at the MTV Europe awards. Latvia's, Tribes of the City are a group of six musicians who play fantastic shoe gazing music. Swirling guitars, soft vocals and pounding drums, its very reminisant of classic 80's bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Ride and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Unfortunately tonight the band sounds as if they have been trapped in a tin box, bad acoustics in the venue rather than the band to blame. The band are very well balanced, no one sound dominating another, the result being a wall of sound with Ksenjia's beautiful vocals creeping through. Check out the bands new cd, "For the sleepy people", on Platform records.

Sinewerks @ Zanzibar , Liverpool , 5th October 2007.

The Zanzibar is without doubt one of the best music venues in the world or it was until the smoking ban was enforced. Gone are the stained walls, smelly atmosphere and one hell of a haze of smoke. What a place to still see a band though, loud and in your face and it still smells bad. Sinewerks is a night celebrating live electronic music in and from Liverpool , it's been going for a while and the night pulls a half decent crowd. First up tonight with their debut gig is Frozen Smoke, with Dan and Gary from Liverpool favourites ISM on the machines and OO-Stoo on guitar the sound is big and akin to NIN or Depeche Mode. Playing a set of 6 tunes all forms of electronica are covered with some cracking slabs of mid 80's sound. Next up is Anigman, sadly the sound is all over the place and it just does not work tonight, shame as previous shows have been full on. Tom Young tonight's last act is fantastic; the sound is loud, crisp and unnerving. Sparse sounds develop into big bouncing balls of noise, layers and layers of music stack up on top of each other, at one point I feel as though I may be sick the next minute I am bouncing up and down, more of it Tom, check out his myspace page. Sinewerks needs to continue, it's different from anything else in Liverpool , its promoting local talent and its only £4 in, bargain.

aztec/dj funk Current mood: bouncy Category: Music
Aztec @ Carling Academy , Liverpool , 6th October.

Due to unforeseen circumstances DJ Funk has cancelled last minute tonight but we're happy to announce the fantastic James Ruskin. This is the notice we face as we enter the club, firstly if Funk cancelled last minute on the night how did you manage to arrange Mr Ruskin so quickly, me thinks Funk informed you sometime ago of not playing. Replacing Funk with James Ruskin is like asking for a trifle and getting a piece of mud. Funk is an innovator, a producer, a mover. James Ruskin always has and always will be a Jeff Mills rip off merchant, you would have been better off getting the residents to play who were fantastic tonight, Bill Heckle especially, fantastic mixing and fantastic tunes you should lend them to Ruskin in future at least he will have decent tunes to play then. With a gig arranged in November and a Boxing Day special lets hope the act we pay for is the act we see.

John Butler Trio, ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Carling Academy, Liverpool, 26th September.
..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
"It's about having an evolving band; it's about having the right chemistry for the songs at the right time". Tonight's show has the right chemistry and its great fun. Now backed by drummer, Mick Barker and bassist Shannon Birchill, John Butler's Trio are as tight as a gnat's backside. Playing a selection of tunes culled from the bands last 4 studio albums and EP's, tonight is more of a laid back jam session, nothing seems too urgent or rushed, just nice chilled out music, played very well to a very up for it crowd. "Used to get high", "Better Than", "Funky Tonight", "Good Excuse" and the stunning, "Ocean", all get played tonight with the bulk of material coming from the Grand National LP on Jarrah from this year, if you do not have a copy, get one your record collection is not complete. If you enjoy a band who jump from rock to folk to roots reggae with a bit of bluegrass thrown in, then this is your band, a must see on his present world tour and a big name to watch out for at next years festivals.
